Heather Ferguson and Judith Rustin will present a joint work in progress for critique and commentary. Below is a brief summary of our paper to be presented:

This paper describes some beginning views of the neuroscience involved in Eating Disorders and how integrating this perspective with psychoanalytic practice expands the clinical repertoire in treating these sometimes seemingly intractable disorders. Judith will present the neuroscience, making it accessible even for those who don’t have the background or language. Heather will present the early phase of treatment of a patient with an eating disorder. In the clinical vignette Heather demonstrates how integrating the neuroscience perspective with more traditional psychoanalytic practice she was able to expand her stance of empathic immersion.
